Description
Garlic Cress – Peltaria alliacea is a very useful and tasty hardy perennial with purple tinged foliage and small white flowers in May to July. It reaches a height of about 60cm and leaves have a really nice garlic flavour which is fantastic for adding to salads. It is very easy to propagate from divisions, as plants make numerous side shoots which can be split from the mother plant and potted up. The main harvesting period is between autumn and spring when plants are not in flower, it actually grows right through the winter providing a very welcome flush of leaves to harvest in the coldest months and the hungry gap. Planting out advice: it is advisable to grow in a contained area if you are placing in a cultivated garden as plants can produce a lot of lateral side shoots and runners over time and will pop up between other plants. You can also grow in a wild or marginal area as part of a wilder polyculture mix and let it do its thing if you have space. Alternatively, it will be very happy in a large container with a barrier underneath which is the best way to grow it if you don’t want it to spread.
