Description
Everlasting onions, (Allium cepa perutile) a really useful clump forming hardy perennial onion which never flowers. Green parts can be used like a spring onion and bulbs (which are not large, more like a small shallot) can be plucked out and used for cooking. Clumps can be perpetually divided to propagate new stock. A great addition to your perennial vegetable garden, resilient to all kinds of weather and pests. Supplied as potted plant with approximately 5 onions which can be planted as a clump or separated and planted out individually.
How to grow
Everlasting onion divisions can be planted at any time of year and will begin to produce new growth very soon after planting out. They will grow well in any garden soil with organic matter added. Plant your bulbs a few centimetres deep and about 15-20 cm apart. Full sun or a little bit of dappled shade. Plants multiply from the base as your original plants divide and grow more bulbs and shoots. Adding some well rotted manure or compost will help your onions bulk up.
Harvesting
Harvest onion greens for most of the year by snipping off with a pair of scissors. Individual onion bulbs can also be carefully lifted, leaving the rest to carry on growing.
Propagating more plants
When your everlasting onions have made a nice clump, you can carefully separate the bulbs and re-plant individual bulbs to form new clumps.
Cooking and eating
Use the green part as a spring onion, bulbs can be chopped and cooked and used like regular onions or shallots.
