Description
Gynostemma pentaphyllum – sweet tea vine, or jiaogulan is a perennial member of the curcubit family. It’s leaves are used a tea. It is also a medicinal plant promoted as having longevity enhancing properties. It is a scrambler/climber and will make a ground cover if left to trail and ramble. We have grown this undercover in our polytunnel where it grows profusely but also have plants outside where they have overwintered and survived to about -5c. Plants are dioecious (individual flowers are either male or female, but only one sex is to be found on any one plant so both male and female plants must be grown if seed is required). and is pollinated by Insects. Plants can easily be propagated by layering, stems root themselves as they scramble across the earth, so you can carefully lift a section that is producing roots and pot it up to grow on a new plant. Prefers a well drained neutral to alkaline soil and needs a sunny position to thrive.
