Can be started off in pots or trays, ( surface sow and just press seeds lightly on the surface of the compost and cover with a minimal amount of compost. Prick out seedlings when they have their first true leaves and pot up into individual pots to grow on. Plants should be spaced about 30CM apart when planted outside in full sun. As a frost tender perennial, you can grow it undercover in a greenhouse or polytunnel where it will survive mild winters, or grow it in a large container and then move somewhere frost free for winter. The foliage will die back but roots will stay viable if not frosted. You will see vivid pink shoots emerging in spring.

Description
Jewels of Opar – Talinum paniculatum, an exquisite edible and ornamental plant with an intriguing name. It has drought tolerance and has succulent leaves which are lovely in a sandwich or salads. A great way to grow a salad leaf without the need for lots of watering. The very pretty pink flowers are followed by jewel like fruits. They can be used as a cut flower. A frost tender perennial, so needs to be grown undercover, or grown in a container outdoors in summer and brought indoors into a frost free area in winter. Very easy to propagate new plants from cuttings and also collect your own seeds when fruits start to shrivel and turn black/brown. It will self sow profusely, so cut back seed heads if you don’t want lots of seedlings everywhere, however they are easy to hoe out if you find you have too many.
