Description
Mashua – Tropaeolum tuberosum is an Andean tuber crop related to nasturtiums and can be grown as a perennial alternative to annual nasturtiums, with peppery leaves over summer and delicious orange trumpet shaped aniseed flavour flowers later in the season. Tubers can be overwintered in milder areas with a good mulch, or lifted and stored in a frost free place over winter and planting out after the frosts. The foliage itself is frost tender so keep under cover until around May when you can safely plant out. Foliage will create a scrambling pretty ground cover if left to its own devices or climb up surrounding plants or supports. Plant out in a warm, sunny spot (ideally with roots in shade for the largest possible crop) in well drained soil. We grow this as a useful perennial salad crop by leaving tubers in the ground to re-sprout the following year. The tubers themselves are edible but can have quite a strong aniseed -cabbage flavour which is not to everyone’s liking! There are many attempts documented online for various recipes and ferments which make for great reading. So even if you don’t eat the tubers, it is a valuable salad leaf crop and the late flowers are great for bees. Tubers start forming after the autumn equinox and flowering usually indicates the start of the subterranean tuber production.
