Description
Salad burnet – Sanguisorba minor is a useful and easy to grow hardy evergreen perennial, salad burnet has a slightly herbal, cucumber flavour, and is a good ingredient in both early spring and autumn salads. The leaves can get bitter in summer time when flowering but it can just be cut right back and will produce another generous flush of new tender growth in the autumn. Plant in sun or part shade. Also known as Drumsticks, Old man’s pepper and Poor man’s pepper, is native of Europe and Asia and is from the family Rosaceae. It was taken to New England in the Pilgrim Father’s plant collection and was called Pimpernel. The Tudors used to plant it along the borders so the scent rose up up when walked upon. You can plant in a container as long as compost is kept moist but plants will do better in the ground. The name relates to its ancient medicinal use, which was to staunch wounds hence its Latin name is Sanguisorba minor, Sanguisorba comes from sanguis, meaning ‘blood’ and sorbere, meaning to ‘soak up’.
