Description
Turkish rocket – Bunias orientalis is a deep-rooted hardy herbaceous perennial growing to 1 m (3 ft) high. The best part about this plant are the young florets which can be used as a substitute for a sprouting broccoli (very nice stir fried). The leaves have a good flavour (mild cabbage in spring but getting hotter) and can be used in salads or cooked. We have found the younger earlier growth is best, rather later in the season. Likes a sunny site and well-drained soil; hardy to -15°C, extremely low maintenance plant and a useful addition to a perennial vegetable garden. Yellow flowers attract all kinds of insect life. Plants go dormant over winter but their root systems are developing underground ready to shoot into life very early in the year. Can be propagated by taking root sections and potting them up, or by collecting your own seed if you allow plants to flower. It will self sow a little as well. Plant out in its final position as they have very deep taproots which makes them difficult to transplant once established, but this also gives them their drought resistant qualities as they are able to seek moisture deep in the soil and are also mineral accumulators.
