Perennial Nine Star Broccoli (Brassica oleracea botrytis asparagoides) produces a central head and multiple mini cauliflowers and can grow for up to 5 years providing the plants are cut right back and aren’t allowed to flower. In 2018/19 we conducted a field trial with lots of accessions of seed to try and bring back some genetic diversity into this wonderful plant which has suffered from inbreeding depression as populations dwindle and only a handful of small producers continue to produce seed and plants.
kale which is very hardy, grows wild in the small German island of Helgoland. It does try and flower itself into oblivion each year but we have managed to keep it going albeit in a stumpy form. It is hanging in there at the moment!
