Skirret – Sium sisarum is a hardy herbaceous perennial root vegetable part of the family Apiaceae, that produces a cluster of sweet tasting slender roots. Skirrets date back centuries, pre-dating the potato, and were one of the main root crops eaten across Europe before potatoes were introduced. Plants can be divided in autumn, or small offsets pinched off to propagate new plants. Skirrets will self sow as well. We are interested in working to try and improve this crop through a long selection process – larger, non woody roots would be good. Talk of pink skirrets on the ‘Free Skireteers’ facebook group got us extremely excited! We are producing our own crop for seed, so we can offer it for sale.
