Description
Siberian pea shrub – Caragana aborescens. A large and very hardy leguminous shrub from Siberia with many uses , which can reach 6 m (20 ft) high and 2-3m wide. Young green pods can be eaten and so can the small seeds which need to be cooked and have a pea like flavour. Bees love the yellow flowers which appear in late spring and into summer. It has the added benefit of being a nitrogen fixing plant and can be used as part of a hedge or windbreak as well as its edible uses. Seeds can be hard to germinate, so you can get a head start with a young plant. It is a good idea to protect young plants as they can suffer slug damage when small. Plants can be slow to establish and can take a few years to get going, after that you should see about 40cm growth per year.
