Coastal hog fennel – Peucedanum japonicum seeds, also known as Bangpung. A perennial culinary and medicinal plant in the Apiaceae family and is truly one of the most beautiful and architectural plants you can grow – a true edimental! .
Sow from March to June. Cover seed lightly with compost when sowing and keep pots/trays at 15 to 20°C until germination, then move to somewhere cooler to grow on. When they have developed true leaves, prick out and transplant to individual pots. Be mindful that slugs enjoy the young shoots, so worth getting your plants to a reasonable size before planting outdoors.

Coastal hog fennel – Peucedanum japonicum also known as Bangpung. A perennial culinary and medicinal plant in the Apiaceae family and is truly one of the most beautiful and architectural plants you can grow – a true edimental! The leaves unfurl in an exquisite way and are followed on by umbels of white flowers in summer. They can reach up to 1m and will do well in sun or part shade as long as the soil is moist, space about 80cm apart. It is native to the coastal areas of Korea, Japan and China where it is used as a cooked vegetable (mainly the leaves, not the stems) and is served as a ‘namul’ ( vegetable side dish).
