Description
Perennial cress – Brown watercress ( Nasturtium x sterile) is a delicious cross between more common watercress & one rowed watercress and its leaves have a tinge of bronze in winter. It is a creeping perennial that needs moist soil, or can be grown in a container with a deep saucer of water underneath. Change water regularly and use a hard (mineral-rich water) if possible. Although hardy, cover plants in extreme frosts or bring indoors. It will make a creeping ground cover if planted in moist soil. We have also found that it likes a nice mix of coir and compost if growing in a container as this holds moisture well and the plants seem to love it. Like green watercress it is particularly high in Vitamin C and K and it is a nutritious perennial salad vegetable with a spicy flavour. Propagate by taking small divisions, the plants layer themselves and root where they touch the ground so very easy to grow more plants, or root cuttings in water. Plants may produce small flowers in summer which are edible, leaves may become bitter only during flowering period so you may want to remove them.
