Description
Vietnamese coriander – Persicaria odorata, a frost tender perennial which can be container grown in a green house or polytunnel all year round or grown outdoors during summer and brought undercover during winter. We advise container growing as plants can sometimes layer themselves rapidly if planted in the ground undercover (but this usually only happens under moist, tropical conditions). Very fragrant peppery leaves with a strong coriander like flavour. To propagate, stems can be snipped off and will root rapidly in water. The leaves are used to flavour rice and salads. It likes moist soil and a bit of warmth and sunshine. In a polytunnel or greenhouse the plants will grow into lush leafy specimens, outdoors plants will be a bit smaller. The leaves are used widely in Vietnamese cuisine. We have found that although they don’t like extremes of cold, they do have a surprising tolerance to short periods of cold weather.
